Lunar New Year (also known as the Spring Festival)
春联 (Spring couplets)
During the New Year, spring couplets are the favorite decoration that people will put up. Spring couplets are also known as matching couplets. They are written on red paper and the couplets have to match each other in terms of presentation and content.
年画 (New Year decorations)
It is a kind of painting. The common folk will paste these pictures on their doors or walls during the New Year to mark the auspicious festival. These pictures will remain until they are replaced with new ones the following New Year. The earliest nianhua were pictures of door gods used to ward off misfortune or evil.
窗花 (Paper cutting)
It is a form of paper cutting and has a long history. A pair of scissors was all they needed to cut out pretty and intricate designs that were pasted on the windows.
Before the Spring Festival, every household will undergo a major clean-up where every corner of the house is cleaned to usher in the new year。
The night before the Lunar New Year is known as the Lunar New Year's Eve.The whole family will gather and enjoy the reunion dinner together.
守岁(Staying up late)
The custom of staying up all night on the eve of the Lunar New Year to usher in the new year is called shou sui.
During the New Year period, the elders will give the children red packets with money in it.
舞龙舞狮 (Dragon dance and lion dance)
Legend has it that dragons are in charge of rain. The dragon dance takes place during the Lunar New Year celebrations to wish for a year of good rain. On the other hand, the lion dance is believed to toward off evil and carry with it all things auspicious.
Lighting firecrackers was carried out to ward off evil ghosts. Also the loud cracking of firecrackers served to liven up the atmosphere of celebration.
串门走亲戚 (Lunar New Year visits)
On the first day of spring festival, everyone will don their new clothes and visit their relatives and friends to wish one another a Happy New Year. New Year snacks and delicacies will also be served to guests.
Shaped like ancient gold ingots, they are therefore called Fortune God Dumplings.
年糕 (New Year cake)
Represents an increase in status every year.
春卷 (Spring Rolls)
Symbolizes good harvest and prosperity.
Symbolizes hope for surplus every year.
